Service and Outreach Activities of the Department of History
History Day. The Department coordinates the annual History Day for participating El Paso high schools and middle schools, and a member of the department accompanies winners at the local level to state wide competitions in Austin.
The Oral History Institute. Operating under the Department of History, the Oral History Institute conducts interviews on a broad range of subjects, especially among El Paso residents and people living in the surrounding area. These interviews are made accessible to scholars and to the public.
UTEP Borderlands History Conferance. The annual UTEP Borderlands History Conference brings together scholars of Mexico's North and historians of the US-Mexico borderlands to deepen and advance the field of borderlands history. Public History Endeavors. Department members train undergraduate and graduate students in a Public History Internship program, and coordinate public history projects in the border region, including a “Translating Borders” project which has resulted in “Museums for a Day” at local high school. Faculty have also worked with undergraduate history majors to to build museum installations showcasing prominent figures from El Paso and the Border Region. The Department has also conducted an Historical Marker Project to research and provide the text for historical markers in the city. Department members have coordinated oral history workshops in area schools and in community organizations.
Paso al Norte Immigration Museum. The Department has actively participated in efforts to bring a museum focusing on immigration history to El Paso.
El Paso History Museum. The Department has actively participated in the establishment of a museum dedicated to the exploration and dissemination of knowledge about the history of El Paso and the surrounding area.
Center for History Teaching & Learning. The Department hosts a broad initiative to support current social studies teachers in the El Paso area by means of an online clearinghouse of teaching resources, a workshop series, and a summer history seminar.
