Congratulations to Dr. Charles Ambler
History Department Community-
After serving the University for nearly four decades, Dr. Charles (Chuck) Ambler decided to retire this year.
Chuck is a wonderful scholar of African History and Imperialism, and he helped chart new paths of study into the fields of popular culture, drug use, leisure, and entertainment history in the context of African history. He was Dean of the Graduate School at UTEP and the President of the African Studies Association. Most recently he served as the "Dean in Residence" for the Council on Graduate Schools. He has published or co-edited numerous books and articles and he is an internationally respected historian. In addition, he was Chair of the Department of History, helped establish the PhD Program in Borderlands History, served as the Principle Investigator for the McNair Scholars Program, and worked tirelessly to keep student welfare at the center of the mission of UTEP.
For these reasons, among others, he has been recognized by Representative Veronica Escobar and his retirement has been included in the U.S. Congressional Record. We think that is a FIRST for a UTEP Professor!
