M.A. Clinical Program

The Clinical M.A. Program is designed to prepare students either to work in applied settings as psychological associates or professional counselors, or to continue to clinical Ph.D. programs. 

The M.A. in Clinical Psychology curriculum requires the completion of 45 credit hours including 18 hours of required coursework, 18 hours of elective coursework, 3 hours of internship, and 6 hours of thesis. 

There are three primary fields of study within the MA in Clinical Psychology program: PhD Preparation, Licensed Psychological Associate, and Licensed Professional Counselor. The core MA in Clinical Psychology focuses on PhD Preparation. This provides students the opportunity to enhance their research skills and better prepare themselves for a PhD program. Students who desire state licensure will need to fulfill additional requirements.

The Licensed Psychological Associate and Licensed Professional Counselor field of study each requires completion of an extended course of study to meet the academic requirements for Texas State Licensure. 

Both include additional coursework from the College of Education.. Once licensed by the State Board, both Licensed Psychological Associates and Licensed Professional Counselors can practice independently in the state of Texas.

Students are advised to carefully review the licensing requirements of the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Counsel.  This includes review of the licensure requirements of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists or the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors to ensure that they are adequately prepared to pursue their career goals.
