- Received a new award from the NSF Humans, Disasters, and the Built Environment Program for a collaborative project titled Cascading Impacts of the 2021 Texas Winter Storm on Subsidized Housing Residents: A Comparative Analysis, as the PI.
- Invited presenter in virtual workshops on Leveraging Advances in Remote Geospatial Technologies to Inform Precision Environmental Health Decisions and Geospatial Needs for Environmental Justice; both organized by NASEM.
- Received a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to analyze exposure of children to vehicular pollution in Texas school districts and adoption of related mitigation strategies, as a PI.
- Received National Geospatial Fellowship for advancing COVID-19 research and education. The NSF-funded Geospatial Fellows Program seeks to engage researchers from diverse geospatial-related communities who will work with the Geospatial Software Institute to conduct cutting-edge COVID-19 research and education.
- Received funding from the U.S. Department of Treasury via El Paso County to conduct community-engaged and interdisciplinary research on emergency food assistance in El Paso, as a co-PI.
- Editing a Topical Collection on Emerging Topics in Environmental Justice in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. We are seeking manucripts focusing on any aspect of environmental justice analysis, activism, or policy.
- Joined the Editorial Board of Environmental Justice, the essential academic journal covering the adverse and disparate environmental burdens, exposure, and health impacts that affect marginalized populations all over the world.
- Published a new edited book titled Geographies of Behavioral Health, Crime, and Disorder: The Intersection of Social Problems and Place in January 2020.
- Invited speaker in the Harold and Florence Mayer Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Milwaukee, WI) in November 2019.
- Recent articles on environmental justice and social vulnerability to Hurricane Harvey have been published in American Journal of Public Health, Social Science & Medicine, Disasters, Environmental Research, International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, and Public Health Reports.
- Received a RAPID award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a project titled Trajectories of Social Vulnerability among Houston Area Households: A Pre- and Post-Event Study of Hurricane Harvey as a co-PI.
- Published a new coedited book titled The Routledge Handbook of Environmental Justice. This book presents an extensive and cutting-edge introduction to the diverse and rapidly growing body of research on pressing issues of environmental justice and injustice.
- Invited alumni and speaker in the Gerard Rushton Academic Excellence Lecture Series at the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA) in April 2016.
- Served as a guest editor for the following journal special issues: (1) focus issue of Environmental Research Letters and (2) special issue of International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
- Received a University of Texas Faculty STARs Program Award to establish a state of-the-art Socio-Environmental and Geospatial Analysis (SEGA) Lab at UTEP.
