Located in room 100 in Union Building East, the SHWC provides convenient access to a wide range of basic physical and mental health care services for students. Services include immunizations, STD testing for both men and women, contraceptive care, checkups, screenings and more.

“High quality healthcare services are provided by an experienced, knowledgeable and caring team of medical professionals,” said Leticia Paez, executive associate dean of the College of Health Sciences. “Healthcare services are not limited to the student’s physical healthcare needs. The center also offers mental health counseling, nutrition services, wellness programs and a discounted pharmaceutical program in collaboration with our University Medical Center partners.”

Students with or without health insurance are welcome to utilize the services offered by the SHWC. Students are asked to pay a $30 office visit fee, which may be covered by health insurance plans. Services are then provided on a fee-for-service basis. Students may have these fees billed to their insurance or pay out of pocket. Students who are unable to pay at the time of their visit may have their fees deferred to their Goldmine account.

“Unlike most community medical practices, access to healthcare services at the Student Health and Wellness Center can be arranged within 24 hours or same day in some cases,” Paez said. “Additionally students have close proximity to the Student Health and Wellness Center without having to leave campus. Many appointments can be taken care of in-between a student’s class schedule.”

All services are provided on a confidential basis, increasing access for students to obtain the care that they need.

“It is a practical way in which the College of Health Sciences lives out the mission of helping others in an approach that serves all our students at UTEP,” William Robertson, Ph.D., dean of the College of Health Sciences, said. “One thing I know about our UTEP community around the issues of health, which includes the Student Health and Wellness Center, is the individual connection that each student, faculty and staff has to the health sciences, both personally and collectively in helping others.”

UTEP student Alexa Magdaleno has utilized the services provided by the SHWC to obtain important services required by the nursing program at UTEP, which she says was easy regardless of her insurance status.

“Even if you pay out of pocket, it’s pretty inexpensive, and they offer a lot of services,” Magdaleno said. “I got my COVID booster here, free, and a lot of the labs I needed for the nursing program.”

The SHWC is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), the premier standard of primary care accreditation. The AAAHC accredits organizations that demonstrate high-quality care and promote patient safety. Accreditation is awarded after a comprehensive review of documented evidence of care, in-depth interviews with staff and patients, and patient care and onsite observations.

The Student Health and Wellness Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit www.utep.edu/chs/shc or call 915-747-5624.
