College of Science
Biochemistry is a foundational program for careers in forensic science and the medical field. Biochemistry majors complete competitive internships at renowned institutions such as the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. Most participate in faculty research projects that contribute to topics such as drug development and biosensors.
Yousef Abugalyon, Ph.D., made the most of his undergraduate research opportunities at UTEP. Notably, he contributed to work on biosensors for rapid pathogen detection. The University's BUILDing SCHOLARS program — a scholarship program for students interested in becoming health researchers — prepared him to succeed in a doctoral program and earn a position as a quality control chemist at Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies.
Biochemistry graduates have taken jobs at major government agencies and law enforcement crime laboratories. Many pursue advanced professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy.
