The Sirens' Song: Contemporary Narrative Painting

Rubin and L Galleries
October 11 - December 15, 2007

Guest Curated by Kelly Baum

Kelly Baum, Assistant Curator of American and Contemporary Art, The Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin. Exhibition organized by Arthouse at the Jones Center, Austin Texas.
The Sirens' Song explored the relationship between painting and one of the oldest, most powerful forms of communication: the story. In the last several years, there has been a resurgence of interest in allegory and narrative among contemporary artists as a whole.
This exhibition seeked to understand how painters, in particular, employ storytelling as one of their primary expressive devices. In the hands of twelve artists, storytelling served as a way to mediate on personal memories and collective experiences, to reflect on history and current events and to address pressing ethical, political, and philosophical issues.

These twelve artist are:

• Seth Alverson
• Gilad Efrat
• Joey Fauerso
• Ali Fitzgerald
• Trenton Doyle Hancock
• Kirk Hayes
• Philip Maysles
• David McGee
• Xiomara De Oliver
• Vincent Valdez
• William Villalongo
• Hilary Wilder

The title of the exhibition was inspired by French writer, philosopher and literary critic Maurice Blanchot's 1959 essay, "The Song of the Sirens." Its subject is Odysseus' perilous encounter with the Sirens, narrated by Homer in his epic poem, theOdyssey.
