Larry P. Jones Distinguished Professor

It is my great privilege to serve as Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences which is one of the most vibrant departments at UTEP. Our goal is to provide undergraduate and graduate students with high quality educational opportunities through the classes that we offer and research opportunities available with outstanding faculty. This is an exciting time to be in biology as both the field and the Department continue to grow and be a leader in some many critical areas such as biomedical, neuroscience, ecology, evolution, and environmental sciences. The department offers true big "B" biology from the molecular causes and treatment of cancer to Polar Biology. Integrated and interdisciplinary research is the wave of the future and we are already riding it to new heights, working with faculty form other colleges and Universities. We have opportunities that few other places can offer, a unique demographic that represents the future, amazing facilities to conduct research such as the Border Biomedical Research Center and the Indio Mountains Research Station, and a dynamic integrated faculty with national and international reputations. Whether you are a freshman beginning the first of four years, a transfer student, a graduate student at the start of their career to become an educator and independent researcher, a staff member who keeps the department running or a faculty member UTEP and our Department is your home. My wife and I look forward to being part of UTEP and El Paso community for years to come.
