Jorge Alberto López

Jorge López is a Schumaker Professor of Physics. He has a B.S. and M.S. in Physics from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Ph.D. in Physics from Texas A&M University. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Niels Bohr Institute of Copenhagen in Denmark, and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California. At UTEP he has been Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor, as well as Assistant Dean of the College of Science and Chair of the Department of Physics. |
The areas of research of Jorge López are nuclear theory, neutron star crusts, nuclear pastas, heavy-ion reactions. He also has an X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy device to study the surface and binding of materials, and has a thin film sputtering device, an XRF gun, and a detector of underground radon gas. He also studies different aspects of political science, such as electoral fraud, migration, formation of political blocs.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, has been honored with the Presidential Award of Mentoring (PAESMEM) and the Lifelong Mentoring Award of NATURE, has been inducted into the Mexican Academy of Sciences (as Corresponding Member), the UT Academy of Distinguished Teachers, the Texas A&M University Association of Distinguished alumni, and many other recognitions. He was the President of UTEP's Academy of Distinguished Teachers from 2023 to 2025. |
