While choosing a biology or science major help you finish your pre-requisites courses AND degree courses at the same time, there is no preference given to science majors. The best way to choose a major is by finding the strengths that will help you exceed academically. Grades are extremely important for any health-profession school.
Most health profession schools are expecting you to have taken specific courses that will transform you into an eligible and competitive applicant. Completing the pre-requisite courses will also prepare you well for the content tested in the MCAT. Take a look at the general pre-requisites for medical, dental and veterinary.
Several medical schools worked together to create the 15 COMPETENCIES an ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate, these competencies also apply to any health professions programs. How will you demonstrate that you have what they are looking for? By engaging in undergraduate research, joining a research laboratory exposes and provides you with critical thinking and learning skills.
The ideal time to start building your application is a soon as you decide to apply, this will give you enough time to work on your personal essays, gain clinical and research experience, and prepare adequately for the standardized admissions exams.
Most application services close in June, you should start a year before you plan to attend medical school. E.g. if you are planning to join a medical school in August 2020 you application should be submitted before June 2019.
