Application Process
Deadline for receipt of the full application package is March 1st, 2024
The application process is handled online (through the NSF ETAP website) and the package consists of:
- An online application form
- Two letters of recommendation filled by professors that know the applicant well
- Applicants will submit the emails of two professional or academic references on the NSF ETAP application.
- Reference persons will receive a secure link via email where they can submit a copy of their letter. Letters of recommendation should be signed and contain the letterhead of the reference person’s university or organization.
- A personal essay that provides information regarding any previous research participation and how their background has influenced their choices in pursuing research experience (1 page, single-spaced)
As part of their application, candidates are asked to:
- Complete registration for an account on the NSF ETAP website
- Select up to three projects/mentors of their choice in ranking order.
Instructions
Complete and submit the online application form through the NSF ETAP website.
- Create an account on the ETAP website and complete Registration questionnaire
- Go to the Opportunities Search Bar and enter in the Opportunity name:
- “RaMP - ROADS to Extreme Environments”
- Fill out each application section, and upload required documents (emails for 2 letters of recommendation, essay on research background and academic goals, academic transcripts, and resume/cv)
Applicants should receive email confirmation from the ETAP website that their application was successfully submitted.

*Acceptance notifications will begin April 2024.
If you are accepted into the ROADS program we will request that you submit an official academic transcript upon entering the program (either via direct mail or email):
