J-1 Exchange Visitors
UTEP accepts five exchange visitor categories: (1) students (degree or non-degree/exchange), (2) student interns, (3) professors, (4) research scholars, and (5) short-term scholars. Information about each sub-categories is by visiting its corresponding link available below:
RESEARCH SCHOLARS, SHORT-TERM RESEARCH SCHOLARS AND PROFESSORS
- The subcategories listed above ARE NOT ELIGIBLE for tenure track positions
- J-1/J2 recipients may b made subject to the 2-years residency requirement (212.E regulation)
- They may not change to another visa category without obtaining a waiver of the 212.E requirement.
- The J 1 visa may be issued for a maximum of five (5) years, depending on the duration of the funding. .
- The exchange visitor MUST maintain an official connection to his/her host university.
- Funding for an exchange visitor may originate from the U.S. government, the home government, home employer, or by the institution hosting the exchange visitor (UTEP)..
BEST PRACTICES
- Consult the Office of International Programs before extending an offer of sponsorship and/or setting up program dates.
- Consult Human Resources when wages will be paid by UTEP.
- Request DS-2019 forms 90 days prior to the targeted arrival date to allow for visa appointments and travel plans.
- Student Interns will need two forms: DS-2019 and DS-7002 (Training Placement Plan).
- The Office of International Programs will issue all forms, as requested, for J-1 exchange visitors and their J-2 dependents.
