Organizational Excellence Through Engagement
Years ago, the Blake-Mouton Managerial Grid taught us that, as leaders, we could approach our work and our teams with varying degrees of focus on relationship and task. The Hersey-Blanchard Model expanded on this framework and enlighten us with the notion that unique circumstances and followers require leaders to make a conscientious effort to adapt as needed and use a style that best fits the situation. As self-directed work teams and Agile development models gain popularity, transformational leadership, originally introduced by James MacGregor Burns, is more relevant than ever. However, it’s not enough and we know more! Today’s knowledge worker and leaders can be given a more comprehensive model that includes a foundation of emotional intelligence and principles that guide leadership behavior found in the servant leadership approach. In a world where the roles of leader and follower are dynamic, effectively and rightfully changing to fit the need, empowering and enabling are paramount skills that everyone should understand if true engagement is to be achieved.
