Daily Sustainability
The Sustainability Committee challenges the UTEP community to incorporate these activities into their daily life.
Do you have any suggestions? Please let us know, by emailing us at sustainability@utep.edu.
Blue Level
- Carpool at least 1x/week to your destination.
- Use both sides of paper when printing, use color print feature sparingly, and change your printer setting to “ink saver” to save on toner. Change your ink cartridge when the print quality is affected, not when the printer tells you to change.
- Before ordering new supplies, check with a point of contact within your department/center/unit to ensure that a gently used article already purchased would not suffice for your purposes.
- Opt to use the community refrigerator in your office/dorm room instead of using a personal mini-fridge.
- Check with University Surplus before ordering new office furniture.
- Take a reusable coffee/tea mug to the coffee shop for your fill of java instead of using their plastic/Styrofoam cup. Some of these places (e.g., Einstein’s, Starbucks) offer a discount when you bring your own mug!
- Participate in the UTEP Eco-Takeout program. Go to http://organizations.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=73208 for more information about this program that involves the use of reusable takeout containers by certain eateries on campus.
Orange Level
- Take public transportation or ride your bike/walk at least 1x/week to your destination.
- Instead of printing your class syllabus, use an electronic version.
- Each season, go through your closet and donate gently used business attire to the UTEP Career Center so that students can use for business interviews.
Gold Level
- Reduce the amount of paper your department purchases on an annual basis by x%.
- Download and participate in a yet-to-be programmed mobile application that connects carpool riders with drivers to UTEP campus.
- Use ebooks instead of printed books.
Long-term
- Move towards expanding the Miner Metro Shuttle service to include routes that include the international bridges and other major centers around town (e.g. Sunland Park Mall). Also, include remote parking spaces at these areas for riders using the shuttle.
- Give entering students ebook readers.
