Hi!
My name is Huliet Moreno Huízar (she/her, they/them). I have worked as a Writing Center consultant, Assistant Director, First-Year Composition instructor, and I’m now proud to be part of the Miner Learning and University Writing Centers’ administration team. Before this, I received a master’s degree in creative writing at UTEP. Previously, I have worked at the Borderland Rainbow Center as a coordinator for the creation of the Borderland Heroes Project’s website, focusing on the development of didactic materials and activities.
My focus has always been to help students, tutors and my fellow instructors work together to create materials, resources and build their knowledge to further our common goal of creating an enriching learning environment. I firmly believe that everyone, every single person, has the right to a meaningful learning environment.
In my experience as an instructor, both here in El Paso and in Ciudad Juárez, I have learned from a myriad of experiences and interactions, all coming from a wide range of backgrounds. My students have taught me the relevance of patience and acceptance, for which I’ll be forever grateful.
My hobbies include writing poetry and developing videogames. Through these artistic endeavors, I have gained insight into how I want my own teaching, and the way I mentor tutors, to be engaging, interactive and even playful. This is the kind of environment, I believe, that fosters a personal relationship with the materials we are trying to learn and understand.
I’m heavily influenced by writers such as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Jorge Cuesta, Amparo Dávila, Manuel Puig and Roque Salas Rivera. In the interactive medium, I truly admire the work of such studios and developers as Deconstructeam, Intelligent Systems, Scott Benson, Bethany Hockenberry, Brianna Lei and Hidetaka Miyazaki.
My objective in the Miner Learning and the University Writing Centers is to foster a community of tutors and consultants that incentivize curiosity in students, making them active agents of their own learning.
