Working at the UWC
Working while attending college can sound daunting, but it is definitely achievable and there are options that make it easy for you to be both a full-time student and be employed. Working on campus is a great option since it allows you to work and study all in one place, and there are multiple departments in UTEP that offer student employment. One such department is the University Writing Center (UWC)! The best reasons why the UWC is a great place for you to work at are:
- The UWC has flexible schedules
Like many employment options at UTEP, the UWC allows for students like yourself to have flexible work schedules. Although you do work as a writing consultant and help students with their writing assignments; you’re also a student with classes and assignments of your own.
Working at the UWC allows you to both work and fulfill your studies in a manageable way. You’re given the option to create a work schedule that works alongside your class schedule. This allows you to be free of conflicting schedules and relieves the stress of worrying about work while you’re in class.
Another advantage of working at the UWC is that, when you are not busy with a session, you can work on your homework and assignments in the meantime! 😊
- The UWC helps you gain experience
Working at the UWC is also a great place where you can earn tutoring experience that can help you teach later in life. Working at the UWC allows you to think of assignments in terms of what an instructor looks for. This allows you to know how to understand assignment guidelines effectively and help lead students in the right direction.
Not only do you understand the assignment guidelines but, as a peer, you learn how to explain the guidelines in simple terms and answer questions so your fellow students can understand them and write effectively. You learn to teach students different writing and brainstorming strategies that they can use on their own and become more confident in their writing.
As a writing consultant, you also learn how to use different formatting styles (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) and you teach them to other students so they can use them for their writing assignments. Even the experience that you gain tutoring here at the UWC can be very beneficial to a possible teaching career.
- Working at the UWC exposes you to issues & topics beyond your major
As a writing consultant you read a diverse range of subjects from many different majors ranging from History, Psychology, Education, Nursing, etc. Each session you have with a new student is full of learning which opens your mind to issues and topics beyond your major.
Additionally, you interact with students of different age groups and backgrounds, which only expands your mind and way of thinking of the world. Because of this exposure to many different topics, you learn how to tutor all these diverse students and you learn to accommodate to better suit their needs.
