THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Welcome to the Department of Geological Sciences.  The University of Texas at El Paso was founded in 1914 as the Texas College of Mines, and thus the geological sciences have played a key role in the institution since its inception. Concrete examples of this role are the fact that the Department of Geological Sciences has by far the oldest Ph.D. program in the university and is housed in well-equipped, 90,000 sq. ft. building that dominates the center of the campus. The department has, of course, evolved greatly over the years but has a long tradition of excellence in both teaching and research. We are particularly proud of the fact that our graduate students obtain Masters and Ph.D. degrees that make them very employable in many different professional careers. For graduate school, it is important to choose an institution that has an active research program, the resources necessary to carry out that research, and faculty that is interested in the student’s growth as a scientist. The Department of Geological Sciences has all of these qualities, and we have students that come from all over the world to study. We offer research opportunities in many areas of the geological sciences and environmental sciences. Our graduate students obtain Masters and Ph.D. degrees that make them employable in many different professional careers. Please investigate the research interests of our faculty.
