Group Counseling

At UTEP CAPS, we strongly believe in the transformative power of community and connection to nurture personal growth and healing. Through our comprehensive group therapy program, we cultivate a culture that values and prioritizes the profound impact of connection on our mental well-being.

 Why Group?

Give and Receive Support

Group therapy at CAPS offers students the opportunity to speak freely about their concerns, all while connecting with and supporting others who may be facing similar challenges. Whether dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or other concerns, the support, validation, and encouragement from fellow group members quickly become a valuable source of motivation and inspiration. It is also worth noting that group is equally effective, if not moreso, than individual therapy (Yalom & Leszcz, 2020).

Develop Effective Social Skills

You can also think of group as a laboratory in which members can experiment with new ways of relating, receive validation, and practice healthier interpersonal skills in a safe and empathetic space. By sharing experiences and receiving feedback from peers and counselors, students can also gain insights into their behaviors, communication styles, and relationship dynamics. Over time, group therapy fosters self-awareness, enhances social skills, and promotes positive changes in relationships both within and outside the group.

Convenient Scheduling

Groups also provide students with convenient scheduling options. Once registered, you’ll meet with your group on the same day and time each week. Furthermore, there are no session limits for group therapy, allowing students to make group a part of their entire academic journey at UTEP. Spanish-speaking and LGBTQIA+ groups are offered as well.
