Developmental English and College Ready Pathways

The purpose of Developmental English courses at UTEP is to assist students in developing the skills they need to succeed in college ready courses. The images below describe the pathways students can take depending on their Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) scores. The following course pathways apply to the TSIA 2.0 scores. Students who are following the TSIA 1.0 scores can download pathways here.

College Ready Pathway
College ready pathway

There are two paths to becoming college ready. First, students who have a 2TWR score of 945-990 and a 2TSE score of 5-8 are eligible to enroll in the following courses: Rhetoric and Composition I, History of United States to 1865, History of United States since 1865, Introduction to Politics, American Government and Politics, Introduction to Psychology, and Introduction to Sociology.

Students with a 2TWR score of 910-944 and a 2TDW score of 5-6 and a 2TSE score of 5-8 are eligible to enroll in the following college-level courses: Rhetoric and Composition I, History of United States to 1865, History of United States since 1865, Introduction to Politics, American Government and Politics, Introduction to Psychology, and Introduction to Sociology.


Co-requisite Pathway
Co-requisite pathway

There are three paths in the co-requisite pathway. First, students who have a 2TWR score of 945-990 and a 2TSE score of 1-4 are eligible to enroll simultaneously in the following courses: Rhetoric and Composition I with Integrated Reading and Writing.

Second, students who have a 2TWR score of 910-944 and 2TDW score of 4-6 and 2TSE score of 1-4 are eligible to enroll simultaneously in the following courses: Rhetoric and Composition I with Integrated Reading and Writing.

Third, students who have a 2TWR score of 910-944 and 2TDW score of 4 and 2TSE score of 5-8 are eligible to enroll simultaneously in the following courses: Rhetoric and Composition I with Integrated Reading and Writing.

Students who have a 2TWR score of 910-944 and 2TDW score of 1-3 and No Essay are eligible to enroll in Non-Course-Based English with Integrated Reading and Writing.


Developmental English Courses

ENGL 0110 

ENGL 0110, Critical Reading and Writing Workshop, is an intensive reading and composition workshop focusing on the reading and writing skills needed for success in college-level coursework.  Students will take HIST 1301 as the mandatory co-requisite college-level course.  ENGL 0110 was last offered in the Spring 2021 semester.  

ENGL 0312 

ENGL 0312, Integrated Reading and Writing, is designed to improve students' skills so that they can comprehend their college-level texts and communicate effectively in writing across the curriculum.  This course is designed to prepare students for participation in college-level reading and writing courses.  

Non-course-based options 

Developmental English offers two non-course-based options (NCBEs).  

NCBE E021 

NCBE E021 is a four-week bridge program designed to improve the reading and writing skills of students who place developmental in reading and writing on the placement test.  Successful completion of this four-week NCBE allows admission into a 12-week English 0312 course.  

English Language Workshop (ELA) 

ELA is a twelve-hour integrated reading and writing workshop that is designed to raise developmental students’ reading and writing skills up to the co-requisite level or higher.
