The Rehabilitation Sciences Clinical Teaching Laboratory

Purpose/Scope

The Master of Rehabilitation Counseling Program at the University of Texas at El Paso has initiated a Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP) in El Paso County. This CRP, a partnership between UTEP and the Division of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services- Division of Rehabilitation Services (DARS-DRS), is a clinical teaching laboratory providing services to individuals with disabilities who are currently receiving services from DARS. In addition to being a service provider for individuals with disabilities, the Rehabilitation Sciences Clinical Teaching Laboratory provides students of the Masters of Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC) program in the College of Education at UTEP with valuable, supervised training and experience in areas such as assessment, job development, and case management. The lab is staffed by a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor who is experienced in providing CRP services. The lab provides students with a highly structured environment in which they can develop and practice the skills necessary to provide high quality rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities

Mission

Our mission is to provide DARS-DRS Participants with quality services leading to successful employment, and to offer MRC students the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to become competent and effective rehabilitation counselors through working with individuals with disabilities in their pursuit of rehabilitation goals.

Once an individual is referred to the Rehabilitation Sciences Clinical Teaching Laboratory by DARS, an initial intake appointment and orientation will be scheduled. Following intake and orientation, the staff and students will work with the individual to determine what types of assessments might be appropriate to assist with formulating a comprehensive rehabilitation plan that will meet the individual’s needs and match their values and interests. Once a rehabilitation plan, which includes specific goals, objectives, and target outcomes, has been developed; the individual will work with the team to decide which services would most effectively help the individual to reach their goals. Services provided by the Rehabilitation Sciences Clinical Teaching Laboratory include:

• Vocational Adjustment Training
• Job Coaching Services
• Job Placement Services
• Supported Employment Services

Services provided by the Rehabilitation Sciences Clinical Teaching Laboratory are available in Spanish and American Sign Language.
