75th Anniversary of the CE Program

Dr. Ferregut

2022 is a very important year, as it marks a milestone for celebration: 75 years ago, The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved the then Texas Western College to start offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, welcoming the first cohort of students in the fall semester. This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on our past, celebrate our present, and share our hopes for the future.

As I write this message, I cannot help but think of our anniversary celebration campaign slogan: 75 Years of Excellence in Civil Engineering Education in the Borderlands. In 1947, the program was established with the promise of providing public access to the best civil engineering education in West Texas, the dream of serving as an engine for economic development in the El Paso del Norte Region, and the hope of engineering a better future for our community.

Over the last 75 years, nearly 2,500 students have been awarded a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree. Your professional contributions have modified the footprint and the skylines of cities and regions around the world as you have planned, designed, built, operated, and maintained the infrastructure projects that have improved the quality of life for millions of people. The El Paso del Norte Region has highly benefited from the work of UTEP’s civil engineering graduates. Your legacy is seen all around us in roads, buildings, bridges, utility systems, and environmental projects that have made our region a better place to live.

As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the approval of the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, this page will highlight the incredible achievements of graduates and faculty. This page serves as a direct and continuous source for you to stay up to date with the wonderful things happening in the Civil Engineering Department. Connect with us as we promote your accomplishments, announce news within the department, and keep you in the know about exciting upcoming events!

Additionally, our department is collaborating with UTEP’s Centennial Museum to bring you and the El Paso/Juarez community an exhibit displaying the legacy of our civil engineering alumni, as they built, and continue to build, the Borderland. The exhibit’s grand opening will take place Saturday, September 24, 2022, and will run through Saturday, June 10, 2023. Bring along your family and friends to visit and join us in this extraordinary celebration. We will culminate our celebrations with a 75th Anniversary Luncheon for our alumni on Friday, October 28 during the 2022 Homecoming week. Mark your calendars!

Seventy-five years is an incredible legacy of achievement to celebrate. I hope you’ll join me in turning your eyes to the future as we celebrate the past and imagine the next 75 years. Our students, alumni, and faculty have contributed in a multitude of ways to make this a special place today.
