CTIS Students Will Participate in 2023 ROAD-EO Competition
Asphalt ROAD-EO 2023
Two teams from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) will participate in the Asphalt ROAD-EO 2023 mixture design competition to be held at the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association (TXAPA) headquarters in Buda, Texas, on April 15th. Asphalt ROAD-EO is a team competition for undergraduate students to introduce them to asphalt materials. Competition organizers provide each team with the same materials to design an asphalt mixture.
The teams then prepare a 20-inch x 20-inch slab using their design. The slab is evaluated on the day of the competition for mechanical performance, safety or friction, innovation, and cost. The competition also includes an interview section in which each team will present its design rationale to a panel of judges from the asphalt industry and the Texas Department of Transportation. The competition occurs yearly and gathers teams from various prestigious universities in Texas and other states.
UTEP has competed with great success in previous Asphalt ROAD-EO editions, placing in the top three for every year the competition has happened. The UTEP teams for this year are composed of students that work as undergraduate research assistants at the Center for Transportation Infrastructure Systems (CTIS). One team comprises Pedro Chavez Jr (team captain), Daren Perez, Melanye Gutierrez, and Hector Garcia. The other team consists of Maximiliano Morales (team captain), Ana-Cristina Anaya, Marian Loaeza, and Sebastian Morales. We wish them the best of luck for this year’s competition.
The Sun City Asphalt Miners took 2nd overall in the competition with a minority award of $1,000 for each student. UTEP students have placed in the top three every year in this competition.
