Art Education
"Art is literacy of the heart."
Elliot Eisner
The UTEP undergraduate program in Art Education is designed to prepare students for teaching careers in the public or private school art classroom with a BA in art education degree and state certification in all levels of art. The primary goal of the program is to provide curriculum, theory and classroom training in the visual arts for future teachers. El Paso and the surrounding area have an expanding need for all level art teachers and art education is in the midst of a growth period as a field of opportunity across the state. In the Art Education program, students will participate in a variety of art and educational theory courses as a part of their preparation and certification. Traditional studio and art history classes as well as a comprehensive block of art education courses are an integral part of the degree program. Students will also experience a rigorous art teaching internship in the public schools in partnership with the College of Education and local school districts.
Art Education Facilities
The goal of the art education program is to prepare students to become effective and creative teachers of the visual arts. The facilities are designed to simulate the art room facilities found in campuses on elementary, middle, and high school levels. The Art Education Studio is equipped with the necessary tools, equipment and material supplies to accommodate students as they prepare mentored teaching techniques and lesson development. The studio provides a space to host lectures, project demonstrations, lesson preparation, guest artist presentations and serves as the center of the art education program.
