Children have become the face of the contemporary Mexico-U.S. border crisis, with many news stories highlighting the struggles of young migrants. In response, a growing number of children’s books focus on the borderlands, exploring themes like immigration, identity, and environmental injustice. However, pedagogical and scholarly resources for this genre are limited. My digital humanities project, the Borderlands Kid Lit Database, will address this gap by creating an online resource for K-12 educators and parents. The database will feature a searchable catalog of borderlands literature with synopses, thematic analyses, and resources. It will also include an interactive digital map linking literary events and locations to real-world contexts, along with lesson plans and teaching materials developed by my Children’s Literature students. This project will raise awareness of children’s literature created by and about Hispanic and Latinx people and encourage exploration of the intersection of social and environmental issues in borderlands narratives.
