Sylvia Aguilar (Assistant Professor of Instruction)

FICTION

Born in Sonora, México, Sylvia Aguilar-Zéleny is a bilingual author of fiction and nonfiction. Her courses focus on characterization, hybrid and archival forms, and the relationship between story and telling for fiction, autofiction, and coming of age. She has directed thesis that explore themes such as migration, genealogies, gender and domestic violence, border experiences,  and social justice.

She is the author of Nenitas (Premio Ciudad de la Paz, 2013), Señorita Ansiedad y Otras Manías (Premio Narrativas Emergentes, 2014), Una no habla de esto (Tierra Adentro, 2007), Todo Esto Es Yo (Premio Nacional de Novela Tamaulipas, 2015), Basura (Tránsito, 2020), El Libro de Aisha (Penguin Random House, 2021), and Una falsa diarista (Penguin Random House, 2025). 

She is also the author of  the LGBTQ Young Adult Series Coming Out (Epic, 2014), The Everything I Have Lost (Cinco Puntos Press, 2020), and Trash (Deep Vellum, 2022). Her work has been translated to Italian, French, and Portuguese.

She has shared her work on pedagogy for creative writing through conferences and workshops in the US, México, Spain, Colombia, Chile, and Brazil.

FICCIÓN

Nacida en Hermosillo, Sonora, México, Sylvia Aguilar-Zéleny recibió su MA en Humanidades en el Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey y su MFA en Escritura Creativa de La Universidad de Texas en El Paso. Ha enseñado cursos tales como Introduction to Creative Writing, Reading and Writing Fiction, Foundational Techniques, Literary Translation and Narrative Techniques.

Sylvia es escritora bilingüe, en México ha publicado cuatro colecciones de cuento: Gente Menuda (1999), No son gente como uno (2003), Nenitas (2013), Nenitas (Premio Ciudad de la Paz, 2013), Señorita Ansiedad y Otras Manías (Premio Narrativas Emergentes, 2014), y las novelas Una no habla de esto (2007), Todo Esto Es Yo (Premio Nacional de Novela Tamaulipas, 2015) y la memoria El libro de Aisha (2018). Su novela El Libro de Aisha recibió mención honorífica en el concurso Enjambre Literario en Barcelona en 2017. Sylvia también es autora de una serie juvenile LGBTQ titulada Coming Out, publicada por Epic Press en 2014. Ha sido ganadora de. Fondo Estatal y el Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes en México en 1999, 2004, 2007, and 2012. Sylvia ha coordinado talleres de escritura para adolescentes y víctimas de violencia como voluntaria. Actualmente es directora de CasaOctavia, una residencia para escritoras.
