Abel Mireles, M.M.
Mexican-American saxophonist Abel Mireles is quickly becoming recognized as one of the most promising musicians of his generation. After nearly a decade in the vibrant New York City music scene, Abel has relocated to El Paso, Texas, where he serves as the Director of Jazz Ensembles at the University of Texas at El Paso. He also teaches at New Mexico State University and has previously taught at his alma mater, William Paterson University. Additionally, Abel is the Artistic Director of The Jazz Exchange and the Director of Border Entertainment LLC. As a recording artist with NYC's Sunnyside Records, he released his solo album Ánimo, which blends Mexican-American folkloric music with jazz.
Abel’s educational journey included studies at the University of Texas at El Paso and William Paterson University, where he learned from jazz masters like Bill Charlap, Cecil Bridgewater, James Weidman, Armen Donelian, and saxophonists Rich Perry and Vincent Herring. His career also spans producing and arranging, most notably on Your Way by the Candice Reyes Quintet, featuring renowned 9-time Grammy award winner, and bassist Christian McBride.
In addition to his jazz career, Abel has worked extensively in the pop and soul world, collaborating with music director Ray Chew on "Showtime at the Apollo." He has performed alongside artists such as Brandy, Otis Redding III, Valerie Simpson, and Dionne Warwick. His national television credits include NBC's "Christmas at Rockefeller Center" and "Showtime at the Apollo," performing with stars like John Legend and Martina McBride.
Abel has performed at renowned venues like Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theater, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, among other venues, and has toured throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. He has also led clinics at institutions such as the University of Texas at El Paso, New Mexico State, University, Western New Mexico University, and Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, Universidad Veracruzana, in Mexico, as well as performed at prestigious events like the Montclair Jazz Festival, just to mention some.
In addition to his performance and academic roles, Abel co-founded The Jazz Exchange with his wife Candice, a mission-driven organization that builds communities through music. He also co-founded Yardbird Entertainment with trombonist Peter Lin, helping to connect new jazz audiences with emerging artists. Through these ventures, Abel continues to make a significant impact in both the jazz and broader music community.
