Liberal Arts Welcomes Chairs in Art, Theatre and Dance
The College of Liberal Arts welcomes two new chairs to the Department of Art and the Department of Theatre and Dance.
Henry MacCarthy, Ph.D. joined UTEP from Gustavus Adolphus College where he served as Associate Professor and Co-Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. A native of Venezuela and passionate theatre artist and scholar, Dr. MacCarthy holds a Ph.D. in Theatre from the School of Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University and a Master’s in Stage Direction from Indiana University. His creative work is centered on directing and devising performance and physical theatre. As a director, he has helmed over 30 professional productions in the United States and internationally, with credits spanning opera, devised theatre, and classical and contemporary texts. His scholarship has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. As an award-winning educator, he has led innovative curricular and donor initiatives while mentoring student directors and performers. This December he will be directing a new work for Mordem Sanat in Diyarbakir, Turkey. Upcoming publications include performance reviews for Theatre Journal and Shakespeare Bulletin.

Juan Juarez, M.F.A. comes to UTEP from Syracuse University's College of Visual & Performing Arts, School of Art where he served as Director of Graduate Studies. Mr. Juarez received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting & Drawing from the University of North Texas and a Master of Arts, and Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. As a practicing and exhibiting visual artist, he brings this experience to his teaching by fostering research, engagement, and professionalism for art majors.
His studio practice employs photography, painting, collage, video, installation, and digital mediation. Mr. Juarez has exhibited in galleries and museums such as the Milwaukee Art Museum (Milwaukee, WI), Haggerty Museum of Art (Milwaukee, WI), Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi & Rio Terra San Vio (Venice, Italy), Aspex Gallery (Portsmouth, England), Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (Los Angeles, CA), Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY), and Syracuse University Art Museum (Syracuse, NY). His studio arts teaching employs an interdisciplinary research-based approach to art practice. Mr. Juarez’s expertise is focused on painting, photography, and critical art theory and has over 18 years of teaching experience.
