New Collaboration Between Chicano Studies and SISD
Faculty from the University of Texas of El Paso’s Chicano Studies program featured as speakers for the new Socorro Independent School District Latino Literacy Nights. Dr. Irma Victoria Montelongo, Director of Chicano Studies, and Professor Adrián Aragonés from UTEP, alongside UTEP Alum and El Paso Community College Professor Yasmin Ramirez will speak to students and parents. Attendees will have the opportunity to read "Graciela's Dream," a bilingual young adult book that narrates the journey of a family towards higher education. The goal of this new initiative is to boost college awareness and career readiness for the community.
According to Aragonés, “Any opportunity to work with our extended familias in the community and incorporate Chicano Studies’ core values of community service and academic exchange, as well as UTEP’s commitment of access to excellent higher education while positively impacting the health, culture, and economy of the region, is always our number one priority!”
The Latino Literacy Nights began February 2nd and will continue with several more scheduled on February 9th, 16th, and 23rd, as well as on March 22nd and April 5th. Each night will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Socorro Middle School.
