Layers of Rome faculty-led study abroad program
The Humanities Program completed its annual Layers of Rome study abroad trip. Ronald Weber, Ph.D., and Professor John De Frank led this six-credit earning course. Miners studied Roman history, art, and culture at historic sites, including the Basilica of San Clemente, Ostia Antica, the Colosseum, and the Arch of Constantine.
"I grew up reading books on Greek and Roman mythology, and to be able to bear witness to the grand monuments of the time has left an impression on me which I feel will never fully leave me," said Julian Qualls, a student participant.
Layers of Rome developed a research component since its inception as a study abroad program. Immersing students in the subject's physical environment allows students to develop research that serves as an educational tool for educators, students, and Roman enthusiasts.
"This summer, students mapped the monuments and buildings in the Roman Forum and Ostia Antica, the ancient Roman seaport. Their descriptions provide content for virtual tours of both sites," said Dr. Weber.
