Professor Adriana Dominguez connects El Paso youth to the performing arts
Professor Adriana Dominguez and two theatre education students led a week-long theatrical workshop at North Star Elementary, a Title I school in Northeast El Paso. Their goal was to provide theatrical training to traditionally underserved students with limited access to the performing arts.
About 40 elementary students participated in the workshop and engaged in exercises that allowed them to explore their creativity, expand their movement, and grow more confident. At the end of the week, the students performed short plays to an audience of nearly 150 school community members.
This project was funded by the Liberal Arts Community Engagement (LACE) initiative. It was a mutually beneficial opportunity as it allowed elementary students to engage with students from their local university to consider higher education a viable option. In return, the UTEP Theatre and Dance students gained real-life teaching experience.
