Professor Isabel Baca collaborates on “Welcome with Dignity” initiative at the El Paso International Airport
Thanks to the Liberal Arts Community Engagement (LACE) initiative, Isabel Baca, Ph.D., professor of Rhetoric and Writing Studies (RWS) and director of the Bilingual Professional Writing Certificate (BPWC) program will be collaborating with the Border Servant Corps (BSC) this summer on the Welcome with Dignity initiative.
Welcome with Dignity is led by BSC Director Ceci Herrera and centers on providing necessary, useful, reliable, and dignified assistance to immigrants arriving at the El Paso International Airport. By composing print and digital texts in English and Spanish, Professor Baca and UTEP students Paulette Villa and Daniela Salgado, will help arriving immigrants navigate the airport more efficiently. The project will also integrate usability testing and user experience to consider the immigrants’ needs when traveling.
The collaboration with BSC serves as an example of a mutually beneficial community partnership. It assists a marginalized population, adds to the well-being of the El Paso-Juárez border community, and contributes to students’ development as well-rounded, engaged citizens who contribute to society through their knowledge, skills, and expertise gained in their studies and community engagement efforts.
