Art Student’s Project Goes to Publication
Associate Professor of Art, Graphic Design, Anne Giangiulio’s Fall 2024 Graphic Design 4: Typography course collaborated with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) Employment & Farmworker Team attorneys Sarah Donaldson and Lakshmi Ramakrishnan on a real-world assignment project to re-design TRLA’s bilingual (Spanish and English) booklet entitled Know Your Rights to Fair Pay (And more!). TRLA provides free legal counsel, representation, and educational services to people with low income in 68 Texas counties. This booklet will be distributed to Spanish- and English-speaking workers throughout TRLA’s service area covering 68 counties in South and Southwest Texas, as well as parts of the Coastal Bend and Central Texas.
From the class designs, student Joseph Trujillo’s booklet was selected. Overseen by Professor Giangiulio, Joseph worked with the attorneys beyond that semester to finalize the design while gaining valuable hands-on knowledge working with a printer to send it to press.
At the start of summer 2025, TRLA printed 3,080 of the booklets for the initial run; and will hopefully print more. They are already getting them out into the South/Southwest Texas communities where they work.
Great design for a great cause!
