Professor Cherry Duke Appointed Artistic Director of El Paso Opera
The Department of Music’s Cherry Duke was recently appointed Artistic Director to the El Paso Opera. Duke, a Professor of Practice and Director of Opera at UTEP has been heavily involved with all things El Paso Opera and was most recently the Director of Resident Artists. She comes off very successful Bon Appétit shows that mixed food, drink, and opera.
Duke joined UTEP in 2015 and since then she has received much recognition for her work in the classroom, in the community, and beyond. Duke has received past awards for her research and teaching at UTEP, including a 2021 Career Enhancement Award, the 2022 Dr. Ann Horak and Charles Horak III Teaching Excellence Endowment Award, and the 2022 Outstanding Community Engagement Project Award. In 2023 she was recognized with The University of Texas System Board of Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award (ROTA).
We look forward to Cherry Duke’s leadership as she strengthens opera across the Borderlands and the links between UTEP Opera and El Paso Opera.
