Two Countries United Through Music
A celebration of culture, collaboration, and music is coming to UTEP as the university hosts a special binational concert with the Ciudad Juarez Youth Philharmonic and Esperanza Azteca Choir of the Autonomous University of Cuidad Juarez, along with UTEP’s own Symphony Orchestra and Concert Chorale. Building on past performances in El Paso and Chihuahua, this event continues a growing tradition of unity that brings students together across borders through music.
More than 200 young musicians and choristers from both sides of the border will share the stage in a dynamic program that blends Latin American classics, beloved ballads, cross-cultural works, and interactive moments. Audiences can look forward to pieces like Alas a Malala, Te Quiero Dijiste, and the African choral work, Bonse Aba. The program also features a special extended arrangement of Be Like Him, led by UTEP graduate student Deandre Wright, which will invite the audience to join in the performance.
This event is about more than music – it is about opportunity and unity. “It provides an opportunity for us to do something together even when we do not speak the same linguistic language,” says Dr. Elisa Wilson, Associate Professor of music and one of the event organizers. For students from Juarez, it is a chance to perform side-by-side with UTEP peers, work with faculty, and experience campus life in a meaningful way. At the same time, the concert highlights how music transcends language and borders, creating a space where shared talent enriches the entire region. With its variety, cultural exchange, and epic scale, the evening promises remarkable artistry and a joyful display of collaboration – an unforgettable celebration of music as a universal language.
The concert will take place on Saturday, October 11, at 2:30 p.m. in UTEP's Magoffin Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.
