Rosa Alcalá Receives Prestigious Fellowship for Creative Writing Project

"Rosa Alcalá, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Creative Writing, was awarded a creative fellowship from the Woodberry Poetry Room (WPR), which will grant her extensive research support for her project 'Beyond Opposing Pages: Poets and Their Translators in Performance.' Professor Isabel Baca collaborates on “Welcome with Dignity” initiative at the El Paso International Airport

"Thanks to the Liberal Arts Community Engagement (LACE) initiative, Isabel Baca, Ph.D., professor of Rhetoric and Writing Studies (RWS) and director of the Bilingual Professional Writing Certificate (BPWC) program will be collaborating with the Border Servant Corps (BSC) this summer on the Welcome with Dignity initiative. Welcome with Dignity is led by BSC Director Ceci Herrera and centers on providing necessary, useful, reliable, and dignified assistance to immigrants arriving at the El Paso International Airport. By composing print and digital texts in English and Spanish, Professor Baca and UTEP students Paulette Villa and Daniela Salgado, will help arriving immigrants navigate the airport more efficiently. Ecuador faculty-led study abroad program

"A group of Miners has returned home from Andean Journeys, an immersive study abroad experience in Ecuador. Led by Eric Rodrigo Meringer, Ph.D. and Selfa Chew-Melendez, Ph.D., these students earned six credit hours over three weeks learning about Latin American history, culture, and related topics. All students participated in immersive cultural experiences, including field trips to museums, archaeological sites, cathedrals, and a functioning steel mill. This summer program also provided students with a week-long experience at the Andes and Amazon Field School (AAFS) in the Ecuadorian Amazon, where students learned about Amazonian indigenous culture from native Kichwa speakers..." Professor Adriana Dominguez connects El Paso youth to the performing arts

"Professor Adriana Dominguez and two theatre education students led a week-long theatrical workshop at North Star Elementary, a Title I school in Northeast El Paso. Their goal was to provide theatrical training to traditionally underserved students with limited access to the performing arts. About 40 elementary students participated in the workshop and engaged in exercises that allowed them to explore their creativity, expand their movement, and grow more confident. Angela Kocherga is recognized as a Hall of Fame inductee by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists

"The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) inducted professor and news director of KTEP and Borderzine Angela Kocherga into this year's Hall of Fame. The Emmy-winning journalist was honored among three other journalists 'whose efforts either nationally or locally have resulted in a greater number of Latinos entering the journalism profession or have helped to improve news coverage of the nation's Latino community.' Kocherga is also the multimedia editor for El Paso Matters and specializes in U.S.-Mexico border news. Her recent work has earned her multiple national and regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and the Maria Moors Cabot Prize from Columbia Journalism School in 2019. Kocherga was honored on July 15, 2023, during the NAHJ International Training Convention & Expo in Miami, FL. A group of UTEP students, faculty, alumni, and journalists from our region attended the convention. UTEP Announces 2023 Distinguished Alumni, Gold Nugget Awardees

Layers of Rome faculty-led study abroad program
