ART STUDENTS CREATE BRANDING FOR THE WEST TEXAS WRITING PROJECT
During the Spring 2026 semester, students enrolled in ARTG 2326 Graphic Design 2, taught by Anne M. Giangiulio, Associate Professor in the Department of Art, partnered with Brad Jacobson, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of English, to develop branding materials for the West Texas Writing Project (WTWP). The organization is a network of educators whose mission is to improve the teaching of writing and promote literacy development at all levels of education, from kindergarten through college.
As part of the project, students were tasked with creating logo concepts, T-shirt designs, and a visual identity for the organization. After reviewing submissions, Dr. Jacobson's organizing committee, composed of local educators, selected a logo designed by student Miranda Hernandez to represent the West Texas Writing Project. The committee also chose a creative barrel cactus illustration by student Annabelle Aguirre for use on promotional materials.
This collaboration exemplifies service learning in action by connecting classroom knowledge and creative skills with a meaningful need within the campus and regional educational community. The project also reflects key UTEP Edge experiences, including Learning Communities and Community Engagement, allowing students to work collaboratively across disciplines while strengthening their confidence, communication abilities, critical thinking skills, and sense of responsibility through real-world application of their coursework.
