Dr. David Carmichael
Dr. Carmichael has 40+ years of professional experience in archeology, cultural resources management, and applied cultural anthropology, including projects in 12 states throughout the western U.S., with an emphasis in the Southwest. Much of his archeological research has focused on prehistoric and Apache land use patterns in the El Paso area, including an intensive survey of the New Mexico portions of the Fort Bliss maneuver areas and Dona Ana range. Since 1982 he has also been conducted ethnographic research on Native American land use practices. He served as the first Tribal Archeologist for the Hopi Tribe, and has worked closely with the Lakota, Blackfeet, Mescalero Apache, Chumash, and Pueblo of San Ildefonso on Traditional Cultural Property (TCP) issues and sacred sites. While working as an environmental consultant, Dr. Carmichael developed the U.S. Air Force guidelines for consulting with Native Americans (AFI 32 7065). He is currently teaching archeology, anthropology and environmental compliance at the University of Texas at El Paso. His ongoing projects include archeological excavations at the Three Rivers site in Otero County, New Mexico and archeological survey at the Chilicote Ranch, Valentine, TX.
