Attending MLC Sessions
Hello! My name is Sofia Ronquillo and I am a PASS tutor for Intro to Psychology. I am majoring in Biochemistry and hope to become a professor in the future and to lead a research group that focuses on Neurobiology. I really enjoy conducting my sessions and I hope everyone who has the chance takes advantage of the MLC.
I took Intro to Psychology during my first semester at UTEP and I attended the PASS sessions every week. I was a freshman, so I quickly realized this class was not like high school. I had to take a lot of notes and do a lot of reading and learning by myself. Luckily, the MLC sessions were there for me. They taught me new, successful study methods and note taking strategies that helped me learn better. I learned to enjoy the material, which otherwise would have felt overwhelming. There were a lot of opportunities to find the learned terms in everyday situations and understand that the topics go beyond something you have to learn for a class.
The sessions were very helpful because I had the opportunity to go over the information again in simpler words and different ways. I am the type of student who needs interactive activities or games to learn better, and this is something the MLC definitely offers. Being able to explain the material to other people and get immediate feedback and guidance is great. I usually study by explaining the topics to myself, so having someone else who previously aced the class helped me a lot. When you go to the sessions, you know it is a safe place for everyone. They are all about coming up with examples, doing quizzes, playing games, and having fun at the same time you learn.
Ever since I took the class, I have been trying to convince everyone of attending the MLC. I think it is one of those resources that highly improves your student experience. The sessions help you find new ways of connecting with the information and with others. You get to know new people, help them and learn from them as well. The PASS tutors take the class with you and they identify successful learning strategies tailored for that specific class. And the great news? What you learn in the PASS sessions you can use to study for other classes! Tutors here provide useful resources from a student perspective, they share tips that have worked for them, they care about you, and they want to see you grow.
