Study Tips: How to keep yourself motivated
The hardest thing about studying to me, is trying to keep myself motivated. It’s especially a struggle for me because I have ADHD and it’s already hard enough to concentrate on work. It’s especially hard when I’m not super interested in the material I am currently studying for.
Because of that, I think that the most important studying strategy to learn is keeping yourself motivated. One of my favorite ways to do this is with rewards! Studying is hard, but if you promise yourself something for doing it, then it can be a great motivation! For me I tend to use video games or YouTube as a reward. Some other rewards I’ve seen people use are things such as snacks, shopping, and movies.
I think another thing that is important for keeping yourself motivated, is knowing when to stop working. Sometimes you reach your limit during a day, and you just need to call it. I know I’ve kept on working even when I’m tired because I felt bad stopping, that I needed to get my work done that night. I’ve learned that it’s better to stop when your tired, even if you feel guilty about it. When your tired your motivation goes down, you retain less info, and your work comes out worse. Learning to call it for the night has been one of the most important discoveries for studying.
All these strategies I talked about only work if you leave yourself enough time to study before the due date. This leads to the last strategy, which might be the most important, time management. It’s important to have enough time study, not only so you can actually study all you need too, but so you can account for emergencies, unexpected events, and of course breaks. You’ll find that studying won’t be nearly as bad if you spread it evenly throughout the week, rather than studying over the course of a few days. Overall, time management and keeping yourself motivated is two very important aspects for studying successfully.
