WELCOME

The UTEP Peer Leader Program is a first-year experience student mentoring program in which Peer Leaders (PLs) develop academic and professional mentorship relationships with entering freshmen and transfer students as well as promote their engagement at UTEP. Peer Leaders are paired with a UNIV 1301 faculty member and work directly in the classroom as part of the instructional team. In the UNIV 1301 sections, Peer Leaders help foster a sense of agency, engagement, and belonging among students as well as promote academic success and professional preparation. Ultimately, Peer Leaders serve as mentors, role models, and intermediaries between the professor and students and their primary goal is to help entering students succeed.

Testimonials of Impact

caitlin-chanoi.png“Being part of the PL Program was fundamental in my success as a UTEP student and young professional. Not only did I create friendships for life within the program, but I was able to network and actively develop professional skills and connections that I use daily in my current position. Without the PL program, I would not have had the success I’ve had thus far!”
Caitlin Chanoi, Research Analyst at Texas Tech Health Science Center, El Paso

camila-carballo-2.png“When I was a freshman, I was really shy and felt very lost in college. I came from a small high school here in El Paso and going to UTEP was a drastic change for me. My Peer Leader helped me feel that I belong here at UTEP and told me about all of the resources here. They inspired me and made me want to become a Peer Leader as well.”
Camila Carballo, Peer Leader, Fall 2020 – present
