There are two ways to apply to be a Peer Leader:

    1. Apply through JobMine.
    2. Download the application and email all necessary materials to univpeerleader@utep.edu.

  • Have at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA. *
  • Have completed a minimum of 24 college-level credit hours. *
  • Have successfully completed both RWS 1302 or its equivalent and UNIV 1301 or its equivalent. *
  • Be enrolled full-time at UTEP in both the Spring and Fall semesters (12 or more undergraduate hours).**

*Students who currently do not fulfill these requirements but will meet them by the start of the fall semester in which they could be hired, may submit an application and may qualify for an interview.

** If a student is dual-enrolled at EPCC and UTEP for a total of 12+ hours, this counts as meeting the requirement.
Job Description:

  • Work 13-15 hours per week (determined prior to the start of the semester by the department).
  • Attend all sessions of your assigned UNIV class.
  • Provide instructional leadership and mentorship in collaboration with the course Instructor.
  • Be professional at all times and model excellent student behavior (attend and be prepared for all class sessions, arrive on time, participate in discussions, read course materials, check email and Blackboard daily, respond to students in a timely manner, etc.).
  • Dress in business casual or appropriate UTEP gear for all class meetings, office hours, and professional PL Program events.
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory Friday workshops from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
  • Meet with students via one-on-one and small group conferences regularly throughout the semester. The schedule is group check-in #1, one-on-one, and then group check-in #2.
  • Be available to students via email, Blackboard, and by holding three office hours per week in the assigned UGLC Peer Leader office.
  • Participate in regular, scheduled communication with the Instructor at least once a week.
  • Communicate with the course Instructor regarding any student concerns.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the Assistant Director and the Peer Leader Mentors, via UTEP email, the offices, remote avenues (if necessary), etc.
  • Actively participate in program service and program development hours, including but not limited to participating in committee meetings, volunteer hours, PL and ESE events, and UTEP events.
  • Attend all mandatory workshops prior to the start of the semester.
  • Maintain confidentiality, per FERPA guidelines, regarding information shared between the Peer Leader, the Peer Leader Program, the Leadership Team, the UNIV 1301 Instructor, and the students—unless the information requires a Title IX report. You will be trained regarding these items.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director, PLMs, and Instructor.
  • Contribute to a positive, supportive, team-centric work environment.
  • This job can be worked remotely, if required, per University guidelines.

Mandatory Training Dates:

  • All new Peer Leaders must attend a mandatory Peer Leader Orientation scheduled throughout the week prior to the start of each semester. Specific times TBA.
  • All Peer Leaders must attend weekly Peer Leader workshops. Workshops are held every Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Workshops begin the first Friday of the semester and end before Finals Week.
