Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)

In addition to Federal classified information, certain types of Federal unclassified information (such as controlled unclassified information or CUI) require access and distribution controls and protective measures. University activities (e.g. proposals to federal agencies, sponsored research projects, non-disclosure agreements, contracts) may include receiving, generating, or using CUI.

When working on a research proposal or accepting a new award from a federal agency, restricted research (CUI, classified and/or export controlled) involves greater administrative oversight as well as stringent security controls when compared to fundamental research. This means the research team will have a greater responsiblity in safeguarding any work that involves storing, processing or accessing data that requires Federal protections.
