Annunciation House Mural

Summer 2021

As part of the Rubin Centers Community Engaged Practices in the Arts initiative, the Mural Arts Project is a pilot program involving UTEP DoArt students. Through an open call, six students were selected to participate in the production of a mural inside the Annunciation House, a volunteer organization that has been in service, hospitality, and solidarity with migrants, immigrants, and refugees in the border region. The four-week summer workshop was a paid opportunity and provided students an introduction to mural making through artist talks with muralists and onsite mural visits. Informed through conversation with Ruben Garcia, director of the Annunciation House, students collaborated and created a dynamic mural that responded to the unique needs of the space and residents.

This project was organized by Rubin Center Community Curator, Ramon Cardenas.
