The Rubin Center was proud to present the 2018 Annual Juried UTEP Student Art Exhibition, showcasing works of art and design created by undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Art during the 2017 – 2018 academic year. All media taught in the department is represented, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, metals and graphic design.
Betsabeé Romero (Mexico City, 1963) is a Mexican visual artist. Her artistic language includes installations, object art, interventions and videos; her style mixes contemporary practices with popular art. Romero specializes in issues relating to contemporary Mexican and Mexican-American life including migration, gender roles, Mexican traditions, religiosity and identity, using and modifying everyday articles of global urban consumption such as tires, gum, cars and tattoos. Her artwork, installations and interventions are a reflection on the contradictions of modernity.
Romero studied Communication at the University of Iberoamericana and received her Master's degree in Visual Arts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Later, she studied at the Louvre and at the School of Fine Arts in Paris and did a PhD in Art History at UNAM. She currently lives and works in Mexico City.
She has participated in more than 20 biennials and has carried out more than 40 individual exhibitions in Mexico and abroad, including at the British Museum, San Ildefonso College, Carrillo Gil Art Museum, the UNISA University of South Africa and the Recoleta in Buenos Aires. Betsabeeromero.com
Craig Frazier is an illustrating designer opening his studio in 1980. He has built a practice illustrating and designing corporate communication, packaging, advertising and editorial communication. He works with corporate clients, design firms, branding and strategy firms and advertising agencies.
In 1996, Craig added illustration to his services. Within two years he had developed one of the most distinct and recognized illustration styles in the country. In 2013, he was published as one of the top 100 illustrators in 100 Illustrators, (Taschen 2013).
Frazier is a unique designer/illustrator. Because he is trained as a problem-solving designer, he approaches each illustration assignment with a keen sense of purpose and clarity. Likewise, when he designs, he brings not only his distinct drawing skills but a refined sense of wit, whimsy and differentiation. “When you have created illustrations for over 2000 stories, you can’t help but learn how to cut to the essence of a problem.”
He is a frequent contributor to the NY Times and business publications like Time Magazine, Fortune, Bloomberg Business Week, Harvard Business Review, and The Wall Street Journal to name a few. Amongst his corporate clients are Adobe, American Express, Amtrak, Boeing, Chevrolet, Deloitte, Goodwill, Herman Miller, Kia, LucasArts, MasterCard, Mohawk Paper, Navigant, Nestlé USA, Oracle, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Royal Mail, Steelcase, Salesforce, Symantec, U.S. Postal Service, United Airlines, Whitehead Institute, and Xerox. Craig has designed seven postage stamps including the 2006 Love stamp and the 2010/11 commemorative Scouting stamps.
Craig has garnered industry accolades, articles and awards from Communication Arts magazine, Print, AIGA, Graphis, The New York Art Directors Club, American Illustration and the Society of Illustrators.
