The 2012 Annual UTEP Department of Art Alumni Focus Exhibition was Eli Arenas: Middle Ground. Arenas was born in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. She earned her B.F.A. From UTEP in 2002 and her MFA from New Mexico State University in 2006. Her jewelry and installation work explores the capabilities of human beings to adjust to difficult situations. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Australia and is included in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, OR. It has additionally been featured in a number of publications including The Compendium Finale of Contemporary Jewelers 2008, 500 Pendants and Lockets, 500 Earrings,500 Necklaces and 1000 Rings. Eli Arenas: Middle Ground included artwork from three recent series: Middle Ground, Feeling Trapped, and How Do I Feel. The first series was comprised of mixed-media wall installations and the other two series consisted of brooches that combine semi- precious and mundane materials. Today, Arenas lives in Charlotte, NC where she maintains her studio and teaches at Winthrop University.
