Because I Can or I've Been Kicked Around by Bigger Than You:

New Sculpture by Jose Krapp
August 15 - September 22

Jose Krapp (b.1970) earned his M.F.A. from New York University (200) and B.F.A from UTEP (1998). He has been a resident artist at Cooper Union School of Art (2001), the Marketplace Program at the Bronx Museum (2002), Henry Street Settlement in Manhattan's lower east side (2002-3) and most recently the Border Art Residency in La Union, New Mexico (2004-5), where the work in this exhibition was created.

Krapp was, in his own words, "brought up aggressively" in El Paso, Texas, a city defined by its relationship with Mexico, which is walking distance over the Rio Grande. The artist recalls that during his undergraduate years at UTEP, "I would look across the highway at Mexico and the shacks put together by any means necessary. It's by source of will that they made it happen." Likewise, Krapp's works seem vulnerable, as though they are about to topple over in spite of their attempts to appear stable and tough. They cry out to be repaired, remade, reassembled into bigger, more intimidating pieces so they can make use of their fighting attitude, beat up each other and "beat up your art."
