Rubin Center Project Space

September 26 – December 20, 2013

Call & Response, featured the work of Szu-Han Ho, an interdisciplinary artist who explores expanded notions of community in both the content and practice of her work. This Project Space exhibition was an informal survey of Ho’s collaborations with artists, architects, musicians and audiences. Through an informal and informative installation of notes, drawings and documentation, visitors were provided with an intimate look at the processes behind these pieces. The exhibition also featured an original, site-specific performance space designed by the artist ,which was activated by an ongoing series of duet performances throughout the exhibition. The space was programmed with live music, poetry readings, debate, dance and theatre, creating a living archive of collaboration by local participants. Szu-Han Ho's work in sculpture, performance, installation, and writing addressed the practice of exchange in diverse collaborations and constellations. Her research and production interests revolve around the shared metaphors of economics and ecology. Recent projects include an Interchange Workshop (Taller de Intercambio) between Culiacán, Mexico and Albuquerque, New Mexico; CORO ARROYO, a composition for choir based on the desert dawn chorus; and The Internal Objects, an inner monologue in catalogue form published by Future Plan and Program. After receiving a B.A. in Architecture from UC Berkeley, she launched a three-year collaborative project in art installation, speculative proposals, performance, and agricultural experimentation on a 250-acre site in West Texas. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received an MA in Visual and Critical Studies and an MFA in Film, Video, and New Media. Szu-Han lives and works in Albuquerque, NM and is currently Assistant Professor in Art & Ecology in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of New Mexico.
