As an artist who has spent most of her life on the border between the United States and Mexico, much of Haydee Alonso’s work revolves around the interactions of those living on the border. The minimalist jewelry she creates – which she calls “tools” – are meant to encourage interaction between two or more people. Her Inter-Acting series exemplifies this idea, as it consists of rings and bracelets meant to be worn by two people simultaneously. According to Alonso, the tools in Nexus highlight the blurring of the border and represent a perfect view of what the border means to her: a place of cultural exchange and fluidity. Alonso’s views on the border changed after studying abroad for several years, and again with the social and political upheaval caused by the COVID pandemic. In her most recent series Cozen (which means to trick or deceive), Alonso reflects this altered viewpoint of the border as a place that is only fluid for those who have the privilege to access it freely. For those without that privilege, the border is an imposing physical barrier in constant flux. Cozen features tools that allow for partial interaction between multiple individuals, yet the interactions are partially blocked or incomplete. All of Alonso’s tools are displayed next to pictures or videos, made in collaboration with other artists, that help to contextualize her works.
Haydee Alonso (MFA, The Royal College of Art, 2015; BFA, The University of Texas at El Paso, 2010) is a multidisciplinary artist from El Paso, Texas. Her work has been displayed in exhibitions in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, and France; and in the United States in California, New York, Texas, New Mexico, and Ohio. Alonso’s work has been featured in The Jewellery Trendbook 2022, Azul Arena, El Diario, and Arts & Culture Texas.

Como artista que ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, gran parte de la obra de Haydee Alonso gira en torno a las interacciones de quienes viven en la frontera. La joyeria minimalistas que crea, a las que llama "herramientas", pretenden fomentar la interacción entre dos o más personas. Su serie Inter-Acting ejemplifica esta idea, ya que consiste en anillos y pulseras pensados para que los lleven dos personas a la vez.
