Julia Barello: Swirl

Project Space & atrium
May 3 - September 22, 2007

Swirl was an exciting exhibition of recent work by an artist who trained as a metalsmith and is now creating wall pieces produced from medical imaging film and silver. Each piece consists of multiple components. The forms reference flowers and birds, yet the material suggests surveillance of the human body.

Barello states: "This work explores the balance between excess and order, utilizing a profusion of elements placed within carefully considered organizational structures. The films are marked, dyed, hand-cut, stacked, packed and anchored in place through the use of silver central elements."

Julia Barello is associate professor of art at New Mexico State University. She earned her M.F.A from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1992.
