Join Dr. Stephanie M. Strauss, newly appointed Director of the UTEP Museum Studies Program, for The Codex as Metaphor: Exhibition Design and Lessons in Narrative from the Indigenous Americas.
Dr. Strauss will explore the narrative structures of Mesoamerican codices, with a focus on the ways hieroglyphic art and linguistic frameworks shaped bookmaking practices in the Indigenous Americas. She proposes that taking the Codex as Metaphor can catalyze new approaches to culturally informed museum exhibition design and collections stewardship.
Drawing from her previous work as a collections researcher and script writer with the Central American Ceramics Research Project at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian, Dr. Strauss will share insights into the relationship between Indigenous knowledge systems, narrative, and museum practice.
Dr. Stephanie M. Strauss is an anthropological art historian and an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Art History at UTEP. She earned her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin, her M.A. in Anthropology from George Washington University, and her B.A. in Anthropology and Latin American Studies from Yale University.
She previously served as the American Council of Learned Societies' H. and T. King Fellow in Ancient American Art and Culture and as a Fellow of Pre-Columbian Studies at Harvard University’s Dumbarton Oaks Research Center.
